What began as a light-hearted conversation in the pub last November has grown into an extraordinary challenge for alumni James Hayes (2014 leaver) and Jamie Harvie-Watt (2015 leaver), who will soon take on the Barcelona Ironman in support of Macmillan Cancer Support.

Neither have ever attempted anything remotely similar before. Looking back, they admit that jumping straight into a full Ironman rather than starting with a half Ironman may not have been the most sensible decision! Training has presented its fair share of obstacles, with busy schedules and even the World Cup providing unexpected distractions along the way.

"When someone is diagnosed with cancer, the medical treatment is only half the battle." they explain. "Cancer doesn't just attack the body; it completely upends a person's life, their family, their finances, and their mental health." James and Jamie are keen to highlight the breadth of support the charity provides every day. Macmillan nurses are renowned for delivering expert clinical care and helping patients manage some of the most difficult side effects of treatment. Beyond medical support, the charity also offers practical assistance when families are facing financial hardship.

As they prepare to tackle the 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile cycle and 26.2 mile marathon run that make up the Ironman, the Farleigh community wishes them the very best of luck in Barcelona.
